Bean is pretty interested in both genitals and babies and so we’ve been talking about them a fair bit.
She recently heard that her friend’s mum is pregnant with a girl. She said, ‘how do they know the baby in her tummy is a girl baby?’
I said, ‘well, I guess they saw a vulva on an ultrasound; that’s a kind of picture they take of inside your tummy.’
She was quiet for a while, and then she said, ‘but mama, some people with vulvas are not girls. So… how do they KNOW the baby is a girl? And how did you know I was a girl when I was a baby?’
